I just joined a yoga online class. Well, I listened to the beginning. After a few minutes I felt like I couldn’t breathe. So a few times I hugged myself for a bit. After 20 minutes or so I stopped and just sat there shaking (hugged my heart cushion at the same time) for about 10 minutes. Tried to breathe through the tightness, and yet could feel real breathing. It was interesting how throat can be constricted, and shaking, yet really feel breathing in body, stomach. I wonder why it freaked me out so much. Tomorrow they have another class by the same person (they have other classes with other people) that I want to try. On the site it does say that you may only want to join for 10 minutes. So it’s obviously not just me (I know it’s not coz of the one who gave me the link – thanks!). I wonder why it is though. For just sitting and not moving much doesn’t sound so freak-worthy. Sounds less to me than sitting in the park doing nothing for an hour – which I loved! I don’t really need to understand why, though I’d love to.

    1. Try it! I feel like every person would react differently, and I think it depends on the kind of yoga maybe, too? I wonder. There’s only one way for you to know:)

I think anything new is scary.

Do you live with anyone at the moment? (I know you mentioned your sons but I’m not sure where they are in the world). Just curious.

      1. I really must get my backside off the sofa and try the yoga – right, I’ll do it today and you check in with me later to see if I did πŸ˜‰
Yep, I have a partner πŸ™‚ One son is currently working in the Sates and my youngest son is in London, about an hour away. I’m East and he’s North London πŸ™‚ x

  1. It’s hard because nowadays we’re not used to listening to our body or our inner voice. I also experience this kind of difficulty whenever I try to meditate or remain in the same yoga position for a longer period of time. It drives me crazy and I’d rather run than let myself stay in this state.

However, with the course of time, it gets better (as always!). You learn that it helps you connect with yourself and give you more control over your life. Worth trying one more time!

    1. I stayed for 20 minutes because I wanted to push through it until I realised that taking care of myself meant stopping. We will see what today brings. There is a class at 5 I think.

        1. It wasn’t for me. I didn’t get anything from it. I like the idea and sound of yoga but I can’t do it and think it would be unhealthy. So there’s that. I’m glad I tried, I know only twice, and glad I know.

          1. Eliza, I haven’t read many pf your posts, so I don’t know that much about you. But if you are a Christian you might want to be wary of yoga. I’m not an expert, but according to some sources yoga has its origins in Hinduism, and every pose is a tribute to a Hindu god or goddess. (There are thousands of them.) Example: “sun salutation” = a salute to the sun god, “downward dog” to the dog god, etc. Since I believe these “deities” are not gods at all but demons, that’s probably why I am very uncomfortable with yoga. I find it very interesting that you had sudden anxiety with it. Maybe Someone was trying to tell you something? My sister teaches yoga, has little Hindu idols in her studio and everything, but as a believer in Jesus it’s not for me. I just do some simple stretches before walking, biking, and/or working out on weight resistance machines. I have good music and audio books on my headphones to keep my mind focused on positive things.
            Blessings,

            1. Hey Annie
              Interesting you say this.
I’m Jewish and that’s the reason some Jews don’t do yoga – I think it depends on whether you’re celebrating the deities or not.
The yoga I was doing had no poses in it. It was actually more about sitting and being. There’s the aspect of buddhism that aligns with all religions – their philosophies are the same – their is though I’ve not studied it and am really happy to hear from your comment – the aspect of idol worship. I’m no rabbi or priest. I would think take what works and leave the rest…
What kind of music do you like?
Again, thanks for taking the time to reply!!!

              1. My pleasure, Eliza. It’s good to hear from you and get to know you a little better. πŸ™‚
I love a lot of different genres of music. I have written some songs, and one of my favorites is when the Lord gave me a melody for Psalm 91. It sounds to me like the way I imagine David might have played it. When I had it recorded ion a studio, a Jewish mandolin player joined us – it was beautiful! On two occasions I’ve seen people get healed while I sang it – one physically, one emotionally. It wasn’t my singing, it was the Word of God.
In light of recent developments, I recently sat on my porch and sang it over my neighborhood. πŸ˜‰
Right now this song is going through my head – also appropriate for these times. Check it out:

                1. I love this song! It’s gorgeous…. as with so many Christian songs I wish they’d record it without mention of jesus then I can pass it on to all my friends. I’m going to pass it on (to my Christian friends), they’ll love this!!! Mandisa has some nice songs you’d like. But this one is really fitting for today, the world, too.
When I heard the first words it reminded me of ashes of eden.

                  1. I love the way in the video it grows from one man at the piano to musicians, singers, and a church full of people with candles. (I majored in theater, so I love that kind of stuff. πŸ˜‰ )
Ah, Mandisa! I remember when she was on “American Idol.” When she was eliminated, everyone was so shocked. I think she was just so good people assumed she didn’t need their vote, so they didn’t bother. – lesson learned!

  2. All I could do was cry when doing yoga. I went to classes for 6 months and cried at every one. That was awhile ago and I am thinking of trying again.

  3. I took a yoga class once and did so abysmal – everyone else had had this instructor before and took it for the exercise – I was a beginner. I had to leave the class – I was so behind trying to keep up.

      1. No, but I got my money back on the yoga class (Monday/Wednesday) and also the pilates class (Tuesday/Thursday). Told my mom I was going to get a portable DVD player and some DVDs of yoga and pilates. She said I should have stayed in the class as I would not follow through. I said “yes I will!”
They are still downstairs, and I think a book as well, in original wrappers. Oops.

  4. i always found yoga stressful to begin with. if you’ve done yoga before, try closing your eyes. 1 – it’s super relaxing. 2 – you will feel like a pro yogi. and most importantly 3 – it might reduce your anxiety (it helped me because i could forget about all the people and just listen to the instructors voice and my breath). i’ll try to think of some other tips that helped me when i started x

  5. Keep at it. Yoga is very rewarding (spiritually and definitely physically) over time. It absolutely helps with anxiety and aches and pains. What site did you use? I really enjoy Peloton yoga so you might give that a go.

    1. Hi Marilyn, thanks for passing by!
I can’t recall what site I used but I know I tried it a few times and couldn’t handle it. I’d actually love to try yoga again. Do you have a link to the site you use? When lockdown lifts I’d love to go to real life classes. I’m not good at keeping up with anything online (I forgot to give my phone lesson on Thursday 😦 ).
      Thanks for passing by!

I used to HATE YOGA… NOW I TEACH IT. if you had asked me years ago I would never dream I would do this. I’m a dancer, well was, teach high impact and now love Tai Chi, qigong, meditating and teach those too. I found a style I actually love. If you are interested and want to be my guest and try it let me know. I am teaching a Complimentary class on Wed. S.I.P. UnWine🍷d Yoga.. You might hate that too and I see you for 10 min and you’re out.. no worries. We all find our own happy places in movement and life.

  7. Sorry to hear of your experience. Everyone’s road to enlightenment is different. The way it sounds maybe try the meditation aspect of yoga first. Leave the expectations aside and try the counting breath method. Every time a thought or anxious feeling comes up, stop and restart the count and the breathing. You will be surprised what the silence can teach you, just don’t fear it. Personal growth still has a cost. Rooting for you!!
